Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship
Program
The goals of the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute fellowship
are to provide a comprehensive educational, clinical, operative
and research training opportunity in orthopaedic sports
medicine and to stimulate our trainees to subsequently provide
exemplary clinical care and contribute to future improvements
in the general field of orthopaedic sports medicine.
The UHZ Sports Medicine Fellowship is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
This is a one year program for individuals who have completed
an orthopaedic residency and who desire to be exposed to
a broad based experience in the care and prevention of injuries
to athletes. UHZ Sports Medicine Institute currently has
3 fellowship trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons
who share in the responsibility of care. In addition to
the office and OR practice, the spectrum of care includes
pre-season and post-season physicals, weekly clinics in
the athletic training room, and game coverage. Faculty also
cover local high school and community events.
During the fellowship year, each fellow will evaluate patients
with sports-related injuries in an acute setting in the
training room as well as on the field. The fellow also evaluates
patients in the office to develop and carry out appropriate
treatment plans. Surgical interventions emphasize arthroscopic
and open ligamentous reconstruction and soft tissue repair
of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. The latest surgical
techniques are utilized.
Didactics
Didactic sessions include weekly participation in the UHZ
Sports Medicine Institute Conference Series, which are held
every Tuesday and Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. and
a monthly journal club. Emphasis is placed on current concepts
and techniques in sports medicine, radiology and physical
therapy. The fellows are expected to present at the Conference
Series throughout the year.
Teaching activities are encouraged with orthopaedic medical
students, and allied health providers. We are also enriched
by the presence of a foot and ankle specialist as well as
an emergency medicine specialist who are both fellowship
trained, share clinical space and provide medical coverage
for our student-athletes.
Team Coverage
UHZ Sports Medicine Institute provides medical coverage
for the Miami-Dade County public high school sports program,
Florida International University, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and
Florida Panthers. Fellows actively participate in all levels
of medical coverage.
Application Procedures
UHZ Sports Medicine Institute will provide two ACGME-accredited
orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship positions for the
academic year. The deadline for application is December
15 of the current year. The Sports Medicine Match is administered
by the San Francisco Match program. Further information
regarding the application process can be obtained through
their website http://www.sfmatch.org/.
Most of the important information will be included in the
San Francisco Match application. In addition, candidates
